Gretchen’s Story

“Life gets so much better when you’re not constantly worrying about food, your weight, or what you’re going to eat, and you’re able to put that time and energy into a fulfilling life.”

Gretchen's Story

Gretchen shares an inspiring story about her personal journey as a former competitive soccer player who aspired to play at Ohio State, following her father’s legacy. It begins with her passion for soccer and her belief that losing weight would enhance her performance. However, this thought spiraled into an eating disorder, particularly after she had to stop playing soccer due to health issues. Feeling lost without her lifelong goal, Gretchen’s identity became intertwined with her eating disorder, which she managed to hide from those close to her. The turning point comes when her parents insist she seek help if she wishes to return to school. Initially resistant, Gretchen enters Rogers’ inpatient program, where she gradually embraces the treatment. A pivotal moment in her recovery is the simple yet profound act of baking and eating a cookie, challenging years of fear and restriction. Her story highlights how Rogers helped her rediscover her identity beyond her physical appearance and athletic achievements. Gretchen’s journey through various levels of care at Rogers leads her to a path of healing and self-discovery. Now a dietitian, she is passionate about giving back to others facing similar struggles and aspires to further her education in nutrition. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking help, the strength found in vulnerability, and the transformative journey to a fulfilling life beyond the constraints of an eating disorder.
